About Therapy

“Not looking to your interests but each of you to the interest of the others.”
– Philippians 2:4

2003674943Do you remember a time when…

… constant worry, self-doubt, and feeling overwhelmed were NOT your normal?

A time when you weren’t your own worst critic. A time when your mind didn’t discredit or minimize your accomplishments.

When it didn’t shine the spotlight on all the times you have fallen short – replaying the past failures in your mind. That time you stumbled on your words when giving a speech, not getting that job you really wanted, or those harsh words you yelled at your spouse.

Each time you envision your problem or mistake, you beat yourself up as if it’s happening in real-time. Or maybe it leads you to start thinking about all those hurtful comments people have made about you.

As you rehash those painful memories, your self-doubt worsens, and hopelessness soars.

1806241540You have to give voice to your worries and doubts.

If you don’t, they’ll continue to derail your well-being and interfere with your relationships.

That voice in your head that says the timing isn’t right to ask for this promotion or purchase this home you envision. That voice that says he will never love you, or it’s just a matter of time before you lose it all. The voice that was once a whisper has become so loud that your actual voice has become silent. All the things you would like to say you can’t, or it doesn’t come out right.

You feel powerless and uncertain about the direction of your life.

It has drained you emotionally and trapped you in endless what-ifs and worst-case scenarios. It consumes you and keeps you paralyzed in mental turmoil.

You no longer trust yourself because your thoughts have robbed you of opportunities, relationships, and hope.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Learn to listen without judgment, challenge its validity, and flip the script.

It will take time and effort, but therapy can help you regain your voice!

785151373Perhaps the most essential part of therapy…

… is the relationship that we’ll build. It’s called our “therapeutic alliance,” the foundation of the work we’ll do to move you toward the life you envision for yourself.

It can be hard to let someone in and trust that they have the skills to help you during this challenging time.

I don’t pretend to know all you are going through, but I’ve worked with many women who have worn similar shoes. Anxiety and negative thinking patterns are hard cycles to break. It becomes a habit, which means that your brain has created neural pathways dedicated to self-blame and judgment.

Have you ever asked yourself, “Why do I continue to make the same mistakes?” Or “Why do I find myself in similar situations?”

To oversimply this, it’s not you. It’s your brain. Your brain is influenced and molded by experiences in your life. Under the right conditions, you can learn how to change this pattern. I have seen uncertainty, fear, and hopelessness up close. I have worked and trained in various clinical settings, such as community mental health, residential programs, and behavioral health hospitals.

While I have worked with many clinical concerns, I specialize in working with women and teen girls to challenge their anxiety and depression through evidence-based therapy interventions. Let’s rewire the neural pathway that keeps us walking the same trail in life, getting the same results.

1687578475Therapy is a place to explore who you are…

I value getting to know you as an individual. That means I want to understand who you are, separate from your challenges. Let’s dive deep into the good, the bad, and the ugly… all without judgment. Here, you’ll have the freedom to express your concerns, cry, challenge your thoughts, and face your struggles.

We will collaborate to find strategies that work for YOU. I believe you are the expert on your life, and my role is to help you connect to that inner source of knowledge, unleashing the wisdom inside you.

We’re going to work through your past troubles…

We’re going to address your present difficulties…

We’re going to look at what’s behind it all…

All of this is aimed at helping you connect to yourself, grow, and heal.

1907732914We’ll take a holistic approach…

We encompass our mind, body, and spirit. These elements are all interconnected, impacting one another as we go through our unique journey in life.

Knowing how to align all your puzzle pieces can help you view yourself in a different light, giving you the perspective you need to find acceptance, compassion, and balance.

Holistic therapy views the many aspects of your being as an integrated whole, highlighting the links between your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self.

Awareness…

You’ll “connect the dots” between your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and spiritual beliefs to see how they interact and manifest in your life. Becoming aware of your entire self on a deeper level can provide clarity, unearth repressed emotions, and foster self-compassion.

Acceptance…

Another component of holistic therapy is accepting yourself as you are (and where you are in your journey) and moving away from who you are not. Focus on the present moment and embrace it for what it is instead of dwelling on the past or the future.

Actualization…

Greater awareness and acceptance will help you connect to your strengths and become a full force. When you do the work to know who you truly are, you’ll be able to walk through life with ease.

Hi, I’m Shemika.

Shullom4This is more than a career for me…

It’s my calling – my purpose in life – my divine assignment.

To serve the women in my community, I have equipped myself with the skills to provide quality service to everyone who decides to take this journey with me.

I’ve also relied heavily on God. I’ve known from the beginning that this work is serious and intense, so I regularly ask for His guidance and counsel to make sure my efforts are productive and meaningful.

Here’s how it all happened…

As a child, I was deeply curious about people.

I spent many days people-watching from my bedroom window. I remember seeing a person and feeling that each face had a special place in my mind and was worth remembering. I knew early on that I wanted to work in a field where I helped others, but I thought this would be in the direction of practicing law.

However, when it was time to declare a major, I decided on psychology. It was unplanned, and I can only credit it to my divine path. After graduation, I went to work for a huge non-profit organization that worked with at-risk youth and families. Since then, I have worked in various clinical settings, but my passion has always been working with women and teen girls.

When I’m not doing therapy…

I’m juggling life as a wife and mother to three children. My husband and I have been together since our teenage years and married in 2011.

I’m a Memphis native and grew up in various parts of the city. Of course, I’m a Memphis Grizzlies fan, but my favorite basketball player will always be Lebron.

Additionally, I love traveling to any tropical place and spend most of my free time reading romance novels, but being with my family will always be my center.

Are you wondering if you’re ready for this?

I know starting therapy can be a bit scary, especially if it’s your first time. And even though you might FEEL vulnerable or inadequate, the opposite is true. Reaching out means that, deep down, you know that you’re NOT your struggles, and you KNOW that you can grow and change.

Now, pause, take a deep breath, and have some faith in yourself and the process. Remember: You’re not alone! I’ll be with you on your sacred journey… every step.

You’ve reached this point on my site, so we know something is calling you.
